Ka-ulu reached the king and demanded to know the whereabouts of his brother. “He’s with the King of the Sharks,” said the frightened king. Ka-ulu then confronted the King of the Sharks, only to find out that he had already swallowed his brother whole. “You can join him if you like,” the King of the Sharks said, opening his jaws wide to swallow Ka-ulu.

But Ka-ulu had other plans. Instead, he grabbed the shark by the jaws, ripped them wide open, and freed his brother. Ka-ulu then tossed the shark’s body up against the sky, forming the bright and dark shadows of the Milky Way.23

Sitting just 20 degrees north of the equator, the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy sits high in the June evening sky. Other Hawaiian names make their way into modern astronomy, including 1I/2017 U1 ‘Oumuamua (meaning “scout”), the first interstellar asteroid (which made its way through the inner solar system in October 2017), and Laniakea (meaning “open skies”), a large super galaxy cluster structure (see here).
